Universal joints are divided into non-constant velocity universal joints, quasi-constant velocity universal joints and constant velocity universal joints according to their speed characteristics. According to their stiffness, they can be divided into rigid universal joints and flexible universal joints.

(1) Unequal velocity universal joint The cross-shaft rigid universal joint is an uneven velocity universal joint widely used in automobiles. The maximum intersection angle of two axes of adjacent constant velocity universal joints is allowed to be 15°~20°. The cross-shaft universal joint consists of a cross shaft, two universal joint forks and four needle bearings. When the driving shaft rotates, the driven shaft can not only rotate with it, but also swing in any direction around the center of the cross axis, thus adapting to the needs of simultaneous changes in angle and distance. In order to lubricate the bearings, the cross shaft is generally equipped with a grease nozzle and an oil passage leading to the journal. Lubricating oil can be injected from the oil injection nozzle to the needle roller bearing of the cross shaft journal.

The cross-shaft rigid universal joint has the advantages of simple structure and high transmission efficiency, but it cannot transmit constant angular velocity rotation when the angle α between the two axes is not zero.

(2) Quasi-constant velocity universal joint The quasi-constant velocity universal joint is made based on the principle of two ordinary universal joints achieving constant velocity transmission. Common ones include double-joint and three-pin universal joints.

The double universal joint is actually a double universal joint transmission device with the length of the drive shaft reduced to a minimum. The double universal joint allows a larger angle between the shafts, has a simple structure and is easy to manufacture.

The three-pin universal joint is a quasi-constant velocity universal joint evolved from the double-joint universal joint. The biggest feature of the three-pin universal joint is that it allows two adjacent axes to have a larger intersection angle, up to 45°. The steering transaxle using this universal joint can enable the car to obtain a smaller turning radius and improve the maneuverability of the car.

(3) Constant velocity universal joints The common structural forms of constant velocity universal joints are ball cage type and ball fork type.

When the ball cage type constant velocity universal joint is working, all six steel balls participate in force transmission, so it has strong load-bearing capacity, small wear and long life. It is widely used in various models of steering drive axles and independent suspension drive axles.

The structure of the ball and fork universal joint is simple and uses pressure assembly, which is inconvenient to disassemble and assemble. The unit pressure between the steel ball and the curved groove is large and wears out quickly. There are only two steel balls that transmit force. When reversed, the other two steel balls transmit force. force.
